Charles Harris Obituary

Charles “Charlie” Harris was born on April 12, 1952 to the late beloved Walter Jr. and Jessie M. Harris in Canton, Mississippi. He was one of seven children born to this marriage. He grew up in a loving and supportive home with his parents and six siblings.

When Charles was 9 years old, the family moved to Columbus, Georgia so that his father could continue his service in the United States Army at the then Fort Benning, Georgia. He was educated in the Muscogee County School System. It was a proud moment when he graduated from George Washington Carver High School in the Class of 1971, Home of the Mighty Tigers! He went on to pursue his dreams of becoming an architectural engineer by attending Columbus Technical University.

Nothing was more important to Charles than being an honorable man who provided and cared deeply for his family. He was the proud father of two children, Darrell Michael and Raquel Jessica Harris.

Faith has always been a guiding force in Charles’ life. He attended the Catholic school until the family moved to Fort Campbell, Kentucky and then on to Columbus, Georgia where he became a member and was baptized at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a choir member. He later joined Fourth Street Baptist Church and his love for music continued while he also served as a choir member. He moved to Jacksonville, Florida and became a member of The Bethel Church where he also served as a choir member.

Charles joined the United States Army after high school. After a tour in Germany, he left the service and became an Architectural Engineer and worked in that field until he retired in 2009. Since that time, he has spent his life in Jacksonville, Florida where he met the love of his life Cheryl McWhorter whom he was affectionately engaged to marry.

Charles was passionate about golf, fishing, basketball, music and grooming his yard. He also loved his plants and took very good care of them regularly. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man a fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Charles achieved ultimate victory on Sunday, March 24, 2024, when the Lord granted him eternal rest. He is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, James Thomas Harris, who embraced him when he stepped into the heavenly gates.

Charles Harris leaves this world deeply loved and his memory will forever be treasured by his loving children, Darrell Michael Harris and Raquel Jessica Harris; grandsons, Antwaun Brackett, Jay’Quan Brackett, and Rah’Meir Brown; granddaughter, My’Angel Brackett; sister, Kathryn L. Skinner; brother, Walter James Harris (Sandra); brother, Freddie Harris (Theresa); sister, Barbara Tyler (James); sister, Kimberly Allen (Ralph);  a godson, Jerome White, Jr.; a loving aunt, Ruby L. Grant; his loving fiancé, Cheryl McWhorter; loving caregiver, Shirley Strong; and a host of cousins, nieces nephews, and friends.

Lovingly submitted, The Family - Charles is resting.

“Well done thou good and faithful servant! “Matthew 25:23
