Christine Yolanda Mayes

October 26, 1963 ~ December 9, 2018 (age 55) 55 Years Old

Christine Yolanda “Christy” Mayes, 55, was called to home on December 9th, 2018 in Jacksonville, FL. She was born in her hometown of Goldsboro, NC to parents James and Christine Hunter. Christine attended Goldsboro High School and attained her high school diploma in 1982, she then went on to attend Appalachian State University and graduating with her degree in Elementary Education in 1988. Christine utilized that degree by becoming a teacher and devoting 26 years to teaching students in special education at Ortega Elementary and Sabal Palm Elementary School. She then went on to spend 5 more years teaching second grade at Sabal Palm. She primarily worked in the Duval County Public School system, but also spent 3 years teaching special education in the Honolulu County Public School system in Pearl City, Hawaii.

Christine and George Mayes made their union one on August 11th, 1988. They welcomed two beautiful children, Rashaad and Simone Mayes into the world. Christine was a veteran’s wife of 30 years, taking care of her home through ten deployments and ensuring that her children were raised in a loving household and to know the Lord.

Christine enjoyed many activities, she was an avid fisherwoman and spent many days fishing with her husband and children near the St. Johns river and Nassau sound/whenever she could. Christine enjoyed shopping, and cooking; there was nothing that she couldn't cook and had not mastered in the kitchen. She especially enjoyed taking care of her home and making it a safe, comfortable place to reside both for herself and for her family. Christine had a love like no other for her family and found joy in being a pillar of strength for them. Additionally, she had an undying passion for teaching.

Christy received multiple awards and recognition in school during her career as a public-school teacher. She also broke a multitude of track and field records at Appalachian State University, of which some are still held to this day! She has been listed in the newspaper several times stating her accomplishments on the field.

Christy is survived by her mother, Christine Hunter; siblings, Angela, Rex, Judy, Michael (Glenda), Bobby, Gary, and Jeff; and a host of other bereaving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and bereaving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her siblings, James and Roxie Hunter (Dad’s side).
