Cynthia Thomas Obituary

Cynthia Ann Major was the eldest of two children born to Morris and Anne Margaret Atkinson Major, Sr. on December 15, 1959, in Macclesfield, North Carolina – Edgecombe County. Due to the family’s military career (USN), “Ann” attended school in Washington State, California, Milton, FL, North Carolina and later, Atlantic Beach, FL. Ann attended Atlantic Beach Elementary, Fletcher Junior High and graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher High School.

Ann furthered her education, attended and graduated from Jones Business College in Nursing and Business Administration which led to her longtime career in banking, with namely Ocean State Bank, Citizens and Southern, Nations, Barnett, Compass and Bank of America.

A high-school romance blossomed into marriage to Samuel L. Thomas and to this union their only child, LaToya, was born.

Being from a Christian family, Ann accompanied her husband Sam to St. Andrew African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she joined under the pastorate of the Reverend Amos V. Rose. Over the years, Ann served in the Gospel/Mass Choirs, Usher Board, Trustee Board, Finance Commission and as President of the Stewardess Board. She was a member of Class No. 5, Brother Augustus Blake Zeigler, class leader.

Her hobbies included collecting Angel figurines, shopping, traveling and enjoying all genres of Music. Her love of music led to an annual trip to Miami for “Jazz in The Gardens.” Her favorite pastime was a daily call to her Daddy, Morris, either seeking or giving advice.

After a brief illness, Ann began her transition from life to life eternal on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Baptist Medical Center, Downtown. Preceding her in death were her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake and Annie Mae Atkinson; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Vlia Major; and her father-in-law, Mr. Mose Thomas, II.

Cherishing her life is her loving husband, Samuel L. Thomas; a devoted daughter, LaToya Thomas; father, Morris Major (Bernice) of Deridder, LA; mother, Anne Margaret Major; brother, Morris Major, II; many aunts and uncles; mother-in-law, Dorothy J. Thomas; sisters-in-law, Dr. Vonna Milligan (Ronald, Sr.), Lillie Jean Sullivan (Gary, Sr.) and Davina Major; brothers-in-law, Phillip Thomas (Zenobia), Andrew Thomas (Edwina) and John Thomas (Carol); numerous nieces and nephews, a host of godchildren, sorrowing friends and one granddog, Ju-Ju.
