Dorothy Mae Daniels

Dorothy Mae Daniels was born on July 24, 1934 in Chester, South Carolina to Sam and Pearl Daniels. Ms. Dorothy was raised in Rockhill, South Carolina where she attended Emmett Scott High School and Clinton College.

Around the age of 18, she moved to Connecticut and then onwards to New York City where she made her home for roughly 50 years. Around the late 1990s, she relocated to Alexandria, Virginia to be close to her daughter Phyllis and granddaughter Priscilla. In the late 2000s, Ms. Dorothy moved back to New York City to be with family. She then moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 2016 where she lived out the rest of her life.

During her time in New York City, Ms. Dorothy gave birth to and raised three daughters, Diane, Sylvia and Phyllis with her longtime companion, Otis Hicks. On July 15, 1982 she received certification for Nurse’s Aide at the Health Resource Center and on November 16, 1990 she also received certification in Home Attendant and Personal Care Services. She utilized her skills to work as an entrepreneur in the private duty medical sector.

Ms. Dorothy’s hobbies included attending the senior center to partake in exercising and dancing. In her private time she also loved listening to Gospel music. She was an esteemed member of Antioch Church and Full Gospel Church of Deliverance in Virgina and volunteered at the St. Martin de Porres Senior Center.

On Monday, November 19, 2018 Dorothy Mae Daniels went home to be out Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Pearl Daniels; daughter, Sylvia Yvonne Hawes; siblings, Roy Daniels and Ruth Williams; niece, Emma Ruth Williams; and companion, Otis Hicks.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Diane P. Jackson and Phyllis Y. Whitley; grandchildren, Bryant Jackson (Michelle), Malcom Jackson (Alina) and Priscilla D. Whitley; great-children, Brooklynn Jackson and Malcolm Bryant Jackson; siblings, Delores Daniels, Pearl Grace Williams (Frank) and Sam Daniels; special names, Jeffrey Borden, Dorothy Bass, Dorothy Miles, Natalie Muse, Darlene and Ricky Johnson, Paula and Carlos Castro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, other relatives and many sorrowing friends
