Mr. Harry Gooden (77) was born on December 18, 1940 in Greensborough, Alabama to Anderson Gooden and Leola Hill. Harry departed this life on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Hadlow Community Hospice.
Known affectionately too many as Uncle Harry or Pops, Harry met his beloved wife, Catherine (2009) while in high school. She moved to Evanston, Illinois where they later married in 1967. From their union three children were born Alvin, Yolanda and Harry Jr.
Harry graduated from Hale County Training School then enlisted in the United States Army. After his discharge, Harry worked as a truck driver for REA Express for several years. He later shifted gears by where he attended trade school to study interior design. Fascinated by design, Harry found his niche and went into business for himself.
Although Harry had physically moved north to the big city “Chicago” he was a down home Alabama boy at heart. Being in God’s country fishing, hunting and camping outdoors was his preference. There was no such thing as animal discrimination in the Gooden household. If it had fins, legs or feathers “Everything could be caught and was good for food” (literally everything) according to Harry.
Over the years Harry health began to deteriorate. He fought his battles with prostate cancer and suffered several strokes. He would later be confined to a wheelchair but Harry never let it stop him from going outside to sit at the pier or a pond to enjoy nature.
His wife, Catherine of 42 years preceded him in death on September 22, 2009. Those he leaves to celebrate his life, sons Alvin (Felicia) and Harry Jr. (Melissa); daughter, Yolanda; grandchildren, Kristen, Yaquavia, Aljamine, Andre, Destiny, Quianna and Alex; 4 great grandchildren; and other loving relatives.
Sarah L. Carter's Funeral Home Southside is serving the family.
