Joyce Diana Stewart

Joyce Diana Stewart was born on August 8, 1954 in Jacksonville, Florida to Elizabeth Ivery Coleman and Louis Key. She was the oldest of three children. She attended Duncan U. Fletcher High School and graduated in 1972 with honor courses, where she was recognized for her excellent English, Reading and typing skills. She was active in high school cheerleading and tennis. 

At the age of 26 she married Noble Stewart and moved to Houston, Texas. Two years later she welcomed her only son, Marcus Osborne Stewart, named after activist/leader, Marcus Garvey and Noble’s father.

She spent time in New Orleans, Louisiana and Tampa, Florida. She obtained her first job at the age of 14, and was able to continue working in clerical positions for mortgage and loan companies and corporate executives. She was also a notary.  Her hobbies included learning new quotes, reading, watching Jeopardy! She loved pugs and was an avid University of Miami fan. Her favorite president was Harry Truman.  Her favorite quotes were “If you are going to make a mistake, don’t make the same mistake” and “hit the ground running.”

She went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 20, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Coleman and Louis Key; her sister, Vanessa “Nessie” Cunningham; and uncle, Patrick Bennett.

She leaves to cherish her only son, Marcus Osborne Stewart; sister, Rachel Cope; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends. She will be remembered as a person who loved people and enjoyed life.
