Bertha Lue Saxton, lovingly known as Bert, was born on April 21, 1940, in Blacksville, South Carolina, to her parents Lelia and Will Corley. She peacefully passed away on January 22, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida. Bertha's warm and caring nature touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Bertha's primary education was received in South Carolina Public Schools. Bert moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1965. She valued education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
Bertha was a woman of strong faith and was an active member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Johnathan Blackburn, since 1967. Her devotion to her church community was unwavering, and she found great joy in participating in the usher board ministry, women's ministry, and the young at heart group.
Bertha's life was filled with love, compassion, and a zest for life. She will be remembered for her kindness and her dedication to serving others. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. She was united in Holy Matrimony to James Robert Saxton.
Bertha's passing leaves a void in the lives of her loved ones, but her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her. May she rest in peace, knowing that her impact on the world will never be forgotten.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, James Saxton; son, James Saxton, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Joann Corley; parents, Lelia and Will Corley; and sisters, Mary Kinard and Mattie Lou McCreary.
Bert loving and giving spirit extended beyond her church. She was a pillar of support for her family and leaves behind a legacy of love. She is survived by her four daughters, Dorothy Brantley (Willie), Shirley Williams (Herman), Georgia Corley, and Patricia Saxton; three sons, Sammie Corley, William Corley (Sandra), and Bernard Corley (LaTonya); two sisters, Georgia Bradley and Beatrice Carter; twenty-eight grandchildren; forty-eight great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Annie Mae Johnson, Alice Moore, and Helen Carter; one brother-in-law, Nathaniel Saxton; godson, Eugene Bell; best friends, Sally Bentley, Joyce Fortenberry, Betty Glover, and Sandra Jenkins; very special cousins, Reverend Arthur McCreary, Ardell McCreary, and Mattie Richardson; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, church family, and many sorrowing friends.
