Betty Ann Frederick

Betty Ann Frederick was born in Quincy, Florida on March 25, 1950 to Aridene Drayton and Leroy Bryant Sr. (deceased).  She departed this life on Tuesday, April 16, 2019.

Betty was an academically gifted student who attended Gadsden County Public Schools and was a member of the National Honor Society at Carter Paramore High School where she graduated with Honors in the Class of 1968. 

She furthered her education at Florida A&M University where she received a B.S. degree in Library Science and English. Upon graduation she immediately enrolled into Florida State University where she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science and a Professional Certification in Public Management.  Betty served on numerous national, state, and local professional associations and service boards, ranging from the American Library Association to the Association of Bookmobile & Outreach Services National Board.  She also received numerous awards when she was employed as a Library Consultant with the State Library in Tallahassee, Fl.  Betty served her community as a Librarian and was a champion for literacy for 41 years, until she retired as the Manager of the Bookmobile Extension Services Department of the St. Johns County Public Library System.  After retirement she served on the Board of the Friends of St. John County Bookmobile and continued to work tirelessly with the community in supporting and advancing literacy efforts in St. Johns County.

For relaxation she enjoyed FAMU football games, spending time with her family, cooking, visiting National Parks with her husband and watching great movies.  She loved preparing large family meals after Sunday church service.  During the Holiday Season, particularly Christmas she was happiest decorating the home and purchasing gifts.  She always preferred giving rather than receiving gifts.  She loved bringing joy to family and friends during the Holiday Season.  As a grandmother, Betty loved her grandchildren and as such one could say she spoiled them to the point where the parents could only shake their heads and smile. 

Betty was raised in a Christian home.  She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at First Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Florida.  Upon arrival in Jacksonville, Florida, Betty became a faithful member of Hopewell Church.  She was a member of the Samuels Family Group where she enjoyed participating in Christian outreach services, such as volunteering at the Clara White Mission, Northeast Florida Food Bank, Cathedral Care, and the St. Johns County Housing Partnership.  Betty’s most enjoyable moments at Hopewell was when she intently studied the Bible with members from her Unity Gold Small Group. 

Betty was preceded in death by her father, Leroy Bryant Sr. She is survived by a loving mother, Aridene Drayton.  Betty’s beautiful life will forever be cherished in the heart of her devoted husband of 20 years, Art C. Frederick. She will be loved and remembered by her children, Andrew O. Scott Jr., Trevor C. Frederick, and Borgia V. Frederick. Betty is the grandmother of two precious grandchildren, Andrew T. Scott and Taylor C. Frederick.  Four brothers, Leroy Bryant Jr., Ray Bryant, Wayne Bryant and Reggie Bryant. Four sisters, Hildred J. Darby (Jeffery), Donna Lilly, Marcia Bryant and Harriot Barton.  Two aunts, Para Lee Bridges and Bernice Jackson. Three uncles, Jonas Turner, Freddie L. Bryant and Herbert Candidate. God-parents, Betty and Clarence Bryant who inspired Betty at a young age to become a librarian; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
