Betty Matthews Obituary

Betty Lucille Matthews of Jacksonville, Florida departed her earthly tabernacle to be born into Glory on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, transitioning due to natural causes.

She was born Betty Lucille Marsh on November 24, 1931 to the late Namon and Lena B. Marsh in Breckenridge, Texas. As a youth, she became a member of Williamson Chapel CME Church and it was this institution which provided for her initial instruction in the Christian Faith very early in her life. Betty received her primary and secondary education in the Breckenridge public school system and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Betty would later go on to pursue post-secondary education in Stuttgart, Germany.

On January 9, 1955 Betty was United in Holy Matrimony to her soul mate and love of her life Sergeant Robert Matthews and to this union was gained one son, James Erskin Marsh.

Betty was a homemaker whose life was characterized by service and it was the highest honor of her life to be of service. Over the years, many whom have had the opportunity to indulge in her cakes and confections would wholeheartedly agree. For decades, the times that the Matthews Family would always look forward to would be the holiday season wherein Betty’s confections would be on full display. In fact, any event that showcased Betty’s culinary skills whether it was baked goods, a fish fry or soul food would be an event well attended. The only thing that was sweeter than her cakes was her pure care and concern for her loved ones both near and far.

Betty endeavored to serve the Lord daily and this was evidenced in devoted service to and with her husband whom she loved dearly, also to her family, and to the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Greenland members where she served on the Deaconess Board and as Church Mother for many years. Betty remained extremely active in her Christian leadership until her health began to decline.

Betty was preceded in her transition by her parents, Namon and Lena B. Marsh; and her brother, Floyd H. Hall. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Robert Matthews; son, James E. Marsh (Yolanda); grandchildren, Raphael Hall (Colandra); granddaughters, Tiffany Marsh and Earstina Marsh; great grandchildren, Aniyah Thompson, Christopher Sean Thompson, Ronald Dawsey, Julius Thompson, Jaylen Thompson, A’Nisha Hall and Damarius Hall; brothers, Fred J. Smith and Elmer Smith (Lucky); sister, Gwendolyn Smith-Williams; brother-in-law, Willie Matthews; along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and sorrowing friends.
