Bishop Calvin Lewis Gates, Sr. was born on December 27, 1960 in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended the local schools of Duval County graduating from Jean Ribault High School in 1978. He furthered his education at Luther Rice Seminary receiving and Associate Degree and a Bachelors in Theology and Interdisciplinary Studies from Liberty University.
Calvin was employed as a Corrections Officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and retired after 27 and a half years of dedicated service. He pastored the Pentecostal Church of God in Jesus Church for over 26 years. His favorite hobbies were running and playing basketball.
Bishop Calvin Lewis Gates, Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 2, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Bishop Oscar Gates, Sr.; mother, Reva Gates; brother, Oscar Gates, Jr.; and nephew whom he assisted in the upbringing, Orial Baker.
Bishop Gates leaves to mourn his passing but to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Barbara Gates; children, Maria (Trent Sr.), Calvin Jr. and Joshua; his niece and nephew whom he assisted in the upbringing, Amanda (Stephen) and Odale (Tiffany); grandson, Trent Jr.; siblings, Linda and Vickie (Edwin Sr.); his two nephews, Edwin Jr. and Matthew; and a host of other nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, church family, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
