Bishop Robert Jones Obituary

Bishop Robert L. Jones was born on December 3, 1931, and passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forest Sr. and Della Jones and his younger brothers Johnny Lee Jones and Robert Cleveland Jones. He also was preceded in death by his loving and caring wife, Floria Jones, after forty-nine years of marriage.

Born in Waynesboro, Georgia, he was taught at an early age “that education is the key to a promising future and to never be afraid of hard work.”  Educated in Duval County Public Schools, he held several jobs before graduating from A. L. Lewis Jr. High School. After high school, he attended Walker Business College, where he majored in Business Administration.

At the age of twenty, Robert voluntarily enlisted into the United States Army. During his service, he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg. He served in the Korean War in the A BTRY145 AAA Battalion, earning awards and decorations such as the Korean Service Medal, WI Bronze Service Star, and United Nations Service Medal for military heroism and outstanding achievement. He also was presented with a United States Paratrooper Medal and a United States 82nd Airborne Division Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army on January 13, 1953. He later went on to work for the City of Jacksonville for thirty-eight years until his retirement.

At an early age, Robert came to know Jesus Christ, and accept Him as his Lord and Savior and the head of his life in 1962 at Holy Tabernacle Church. In October 1963, he became a minister.  “Full of God’s Love,” Bishop Jones indeed possessed the Fruits of the Spirit as a humble servant of God - always standing for what is right.

For sixty years, Bishop Jones served at Holy Tabernacle Church and was responsible for leading the church to its current location. He inspired many through the word of God. He abundantly ministered, counseled, and prayed for those in need as part of his commitment to save souls. He desired that we come to know and “not just say we know” Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

Bishop Jones is survived by his loving son, Sherod DeVaughn Jones (Karen) of Sugar Land, TX; three grandchildren, Ashley Bunkley (Terrence) of DeSoto, TX, Sherod DeVaughn Jones, II (Zachia) of Charlotte, NC, and Vaughn Jones of Houston, TX; three sisters, Jannie Mae Watkins of Jacksonville, FL, Paulean Jones-Gray (Apostle Louis) of Charlotte, NC and Willie Mae Nelson (Kenny) of Margate, FL; one brother, Forest Jones, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Charlotte, NC; four great-grandchildren, Amaree, Asante, Aaylen-Chayce, and Bree; three sisters-in-law, Minnie Lee Chavous, Sarah Reed (Leonard), and Beatrice Curry (Dr. William) all of Aiken, SC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
