Carolyn Wright Obituary

Carolyn Johnson Wright, affectionately known as “Kay,” was born on March 2, 1943, in Valdosta, Georgia, to the late LeRoy and Sallie Johnson. She was a proud graduate of Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Class of 1961.

Guided by a servant’s heart and a deep compassion for others, Carolyn pursued her calling in nursing. She earned her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license in 1967 and remained committed to professional growth throughout her life. In the 1980s, she furthered her education at Florida Community College at Jacksonville, where she obtained her Registered Nursing (RN) degree.

Carolyn’s career was marked by excellence, empathy, and steadfast dedication. In the late 1970s, she began working with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, strengthening her passion for supporting individuals during life’s most challenging seasons. After earning her RN credential, she devoted herself to caring for residents at the Eartha M. White Nursing Facility, where her compassion and gentle spirit touched countless lives.

Her nurturing nature extended well beyond her profession. With a desire to provide a safe, loving environment for her family and the children of close friends, Carolyn established a Home Daycare Center. There, she lovingly cared for many children who affectionately came to know her as “Nana.”

In her quiet time, Carolyn found joy in reading, journaling, traveling, and playing solitaire on her phone. She embraced life fully traveling by plane, cruise ship, and car to experience new destinations. Journaling was especially sacred to her; it was a space where she communed with God, reflected deeply, and expressed her heart. This spiritual practice inspired her to become an author. She wrote Death of a Spouse, a heartfelt memoir recounting her journey of caring for her beloved husband during his courageous battle with lung cancer.

Faith was the cornerstone of Carolyn’s life. In her early adult years, she worshiped at New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, faithfully serving as a Deaconess, choir member, and active committee worker. In the 1980s, she joined Philippian Community Church with her two sons, where she continued to serve diligently as a primary Sunday School teacher and a dedicated volunteer in the tape and CD ministry. Her love for God was reflected not only in her service, but in the grace and integrity with which she lived each day.

In 1960, Carolyn, lovingly known as “Carolyn Dune Wright,” united in marriage with the late Otis Wright Jr. Together, they built a life rooted in love in Jacksonville, Florida. Their union was blessed with three children: Otis “Trey” Wright (Cynthia), LeAnthony “Tony” Wright (Deborah) and Carolyn “Tricey” Laws.

Her grandchildren were the joy of her heart: Deandrea, Trey, Adrienna, Kailyn, and Kristin Wright (who preceded her in death), along with Victoria and JeVann Laws. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her memory.

Carolyn shared a special bond with her bonus siblings, Jennifer Bradley (Terry) and Terry Johnson (Brenda). She was lovingly supported by devoted caregivers Deborah Hankerson, Mattie Jackson, Susan Laws, and Darryl Wright. She also treasured lifelong friendships with Faith Jennings, Herma White, Connie Shorey, and Gail Willis.

Carolyn’s life stands as a beautiful testament to faith, resilience, service, and unconditional love. Her legacy of compassion, strength, and devotion will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
