Clarence Stamper Obituary

Clarence Willie Stamper, better known as Horse, was born on April 25, 1936, to his parents, Hilliard Clifford Stamper Sr. and Victoria Hargrove Stamper. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida where he later met and married the love of his life, Martha Frances Stamper, with whom he shared a devoted marriage of 68 years, 2 months, and 3 days.

Clarence attended the local schools in Duval County. He proudly served on the Federal Grand Jury. He was a member of Daysprings Baptist Church later changing his membership to Mount Bethel Baptist Church under leadership of Rev Robert Herring.

He dedicated much of his life to his work as a Meat Operations Specialist at Daylight Grocery and Naval Air Station (Mayport) Commissary, serving faithfully for over four decades before retiring in 1996. He was also a dedicated business owner who opened and operated a neighborhood grocery store (Stamper’s Grocery) beginning in the 1960’s, providing not only essential goods but a welcoming place for the community. In 1974, guided by a concern for others, he expanded his vision by adding a medical doctor’s office (Dr. Chung’s) to the property, helping ensure access to affordable healthcare for the people he served.

Clarence lived a life guided by compassion for all people, regardless of social or economic status. With a gentle spirit and an open heart, he treated everyone with dignity, respect, and kindness. His legacy is one of humanity, empathy, and unconditional care for others.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Hilliard and Victoria Stamper, his loving and dedicated wife, Martha Stamper; his bonus son, Leonard Miller; brothers, Roger Stamper, Verdel Stamper, Hilliard Stamper, Jr. and Anthony Stamper; and his beloved grandson, Timotheus LaTroy Stamper.

Horse leaves to cherish his memories and to carry on his legacy his children, Willie Leroy Stamper (Vivie), Carol Boston (Isreal Jerome), Martha Stamper and Deborah Miller; brother, Bobby Stamper; sisters, Geneva Sapp and Eleanor Hill; grandchildren, Wil Stamper (Shakakan), Christianna Wilkerson, Jaron Stamper, Travis Stamper, Tremaine Stamper (Fallon), Valencia Thomas, Javacia Boston, Isreal Boston, II (Samiyyah) and Roderick Boston; great grandchildren, Wil, Aaron, Jade, Wisdom, Micah, Zaven, Nijel, Jaron Jr, Jamarion, Nakiyah, Kiyah, Kaitlyn, Gerard “G2”, Justis, Travis Jr., Raeya, Rylee, Raegan, Richlyn, Ziare, Amir and Zora; great-great-grandchildren, Legend, Kyson, Kristian, Londyn, Jai, Kyleigh Frances, Journie, A’laina, Adalynn and Da’Mhazi; godchildren, Jay Stanley Christopher, Lila Brown (Sam), Annette Cole and Angelia Horace-Smith (Craig); beloved nephew, Larry Dixon; in-laws, Mary McRoy, Corine “Georgia” McNair (Clarence), Evelyn “Tunk” Edwards, Connie Jenkins (Oliver), Benjamin Lewis, Robert Lewis (Martha), Paul Christie (Anell) and Willie “Jack” Jackson.
