Deacon David Lee Mitchell

Deacon David Lee Mitchell was born on August 22, 1956, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Anson George Mitchell and Dorothy Mae Whittaker Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Thera Mae “Dee Dee” Mitchell Washington (Carl Washington).

David attended the public schools of Duval County and was a vital part of the Paxton Senior High School Class of 1974. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. The discipline, honor, and commitment he developed during his military service remained evident throughout every season of his life.

David later accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and from that moment forward, he was committed to living a life that reflected his faith. He became a faithful member of Tru-Way Church of the Risen Christ, where he joyfully served as both an usher and a deacon. He loved his church family dearly and served with humility, compassion, and a willing heart. Whether welcoming worshippers at the door, serving during Communion services, or encouraging others through quiet acts of kindness, David’s gentle spirit and unwavering faith left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Known for his impeccable work ethic, David learned the value of hard work from his parents at an early age. He spent nearly 50 years as a commercial truck driver, traveling highways from one coast of the country to the other. Truck driving was more than a career—it was his passion. The road became a part of who he was, and even after retirement, he found himself answering its call once again, intending to retire later this year. His fellow truck drivers knew him as dependable, hardworking, and always willing to help.

When he wasn’t on the road, David enjoyed working with his hands. He had a gift for repairing and restoring things that others may have overlooked. Whether finding scrap metal or old equipment to fix, he loved staying busy and took pride in being able to build, repair, and solve almost any problem. If something was broken, David would find a way to make it work again.

David was a sweet, humble, and selfless man whose kindness spoke louder than words. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand without expecting anything in return. He believed in treating everyone with respect and leaving people better than he found them. His calm demeanor, gentle smile, and generous heart made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.

Family was the center of David’s life. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, caring brother, uncle, cousin, and loyal friend. He treasured every opportunity to gather with family, share stories, laugh together, and create lasting memories. He especially enjoyed cooking, with seafood being one of his favorite meals to prepare for those he loved. His last family gathering during Memorial Day weekend with his nieces and nephews will forever remain a cherished memory.

For 32 beautiful years, David was married to the love of his life, Sylvia Corlette Brown Mitchell. Together they built a home rooted in love, faith, and generosity. David was a devoted provider who worked tirelessly to ensure his family wanted for nothing. Their home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay, a warm meal, or a listening ear. His love extended beyond people to his faithful companions, his beloved dogs Benji, Buddy, Cooper, Max, Milo, and Apollo, who brought him comfort, joy, and companionship throughout the years.

David leaves to cherish his precious memories: his beloved wife, Sylvia Corlette Mitchell; sons, Reyes Jackson, Sr. and David D. Mitchell, Sr.; stepsons, Ronall Wright, Sr. and Corey Wright (Melisa); grandchildren, Reyes Jackson, Jr., La’Reyes Jackson, David D. Mitchell, Jr., Chase I. Mitchell, Jahkai Thomas, Ronall Wright, Jr., Royal Wright, Kanijah Wright, Rosylia Wright, and Vlynsia Wright; great-grandchildren, Reyes Jackson III, Zion Jackson, King Jackson, and Versai Wright; brothers, Anson Mitchell and Erwin Mitchell (Valarese); sister, Beverly Mitchell Brown (Calvin Brown, deceased); brothers-and-sisters-in-law; godchildren, Iesha Williams (Ray), Kenyaughna Sessions (Steven), Joynai Braziel, Yagnay Ramos and Tatiana Stewart; uncle, Nathaniel Whittaker; favorite cousins, Brenda Dent, Barbara Baker, and Catherine Wortherly; neighbors; lifelong friends from Jacksonville’s Eastside; fellow truck drivers; his beloved dog, Apollo; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and dear friends who will forever cherish the time they shared with him.

Although our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that David lived a life of purpose, faith, service, humility, and love. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue through the lives he touched, the family he cherished, the church he faithfully served, and the example he set each day. His memory will forever remain in our hearts, and his love will continue to guide us until we meet again.
