Deacon Mack McCray, affectionately known as “Deacon Mack” (93), a life-long resident of Dual County was born on September 14, 1925 to the late Eddie and Janie McCray. He was the second of four siblings which preceded him in death. He was a long-time resident of the Southside of Jacksonville, Florida.
Deacon Mack acquired his formal education in the public schools of Putnam County (Palatka, Florida) before moving to Jacksonville, Florida. On December 27, 1947 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Sister Amanda Jackson McCray with seventy-one years of marriage. As a result of their love and union, the Lord blessed them with nine children; one preceding in death was a son, Curtis McCray.
For his heroic service in the United States Army, during WWII, he received two bronze service stars and a victory medal. After discharge from the military. He worked for Duval County Public Schools for over 27 years and retired in 1990. He was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church currently named Renewed Life Ministries where he served as a Sunday School Supertendent, Deacon of District #3 until his health declined.
On Sunday, April 28, 2019 he departed this earthly life. Leaving to cherish his memories and embrace his legacy, his wife of 71 years, Amanda McCray; children, Edward McCray, Danny McCray, Betty J. Tucker (Bobby), Maxine Stephens (Leotis), Theresa A. Bland (Dwyer), Frederick McCray (Vera), Leon McCray and Raymond McCray; grandchildren, Shana, Kiara, Jamal, Erica, Shannon, Kenya, Delvin, Shenesha, Darrin, Bobby, Tyrone, Alicia, Derek, Tamara, Tierra, Frederick II and Trevone; 35 great grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousin, and devoted friends of Brooker Road, Brooker Place and Pine View Circle. Deacon Mack will be greatly missed and always cherished by all who knew and loved him!
