Deaconess Betty Robinson Obituary

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

A Time to Be Born: Betty Jean Jackson was born on January 5, 1945, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was one of ten children born to Samuel Jackson and Furnella Burney. Betty was adopted and loving raised by Eula Mae Hobbs, yet she remained connected to her biological family and maintained close relationships with her siblings throughout her life.

A Time to Learn and Grow: Betty was educated in the Duval County Public Schools and later pursued higher education at Florida Community College. In 2003, she proudly earned an Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Management.

Her spiritual journey began at Greater Missionary Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she was a faithful and active member. Over the years, she served in numerous capacities, including church clerk, member of the finance committee, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, deaconess, and was ultimately honored as the “Mother of the Church.”

Betty had a variety of hobbies and pastimes she enjoyed—fishing, shopping at flea markets, and making regular visits to Walmart were among her favorites.

A Time to Love: Betty and Linton joined together in Holy Matrimony in Charlton County, where their love story began. They shared forty beautiful years of marriage and together raised three wonderful children, building a strong and loving family rooted in faith and devotion.

A Time to Serve: Betty's love for children and education guided her to the Jacksonville Urban League, where she began working in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty” initiative. There, she played a pivotal role in developing early childhood curricula and implementing best practices in education. She dedicated more than four decades to this important work before retiring in 2006.

However, her dedication to her community did not end there. In 2018, she returned to the workforce out of love for people and her commitment to service, joining the City of Jacksonville’s Tax Collector’s Office as a help representative. She served in this role faithfully until her passing.

A Time for Family: Betty was the proud mother of three children, Gregory Hobbs, Cynthia Nicholas, and the late Linton Robinson Jr. She is remembered lovingly by her siblings, brothers, the late Samuel Jackson Jr., the late John Hobbs, Joseph Linder, Ronald Linder, the late Josh Linder (Gwendolyn), Barry Linder, Moses Maylor (Sonja), and Gary Linder; sisters, the late Vivian Jackson-Reid, Judy Holiday (Westley), and Vanessa Linder-Solomon; her beloved grandchildren, Angela Scott, Broderick Scott, Andrew Lee Haynes, Arthur Nicholas Jr. (Erin), De’Anna Byrd (Steven), Lintel Kirkland, Linton Kirkland, and Youshi Kirkland; great-grandchildren, Amare Nicholas, Zae’veon Kirkland, Kamyrnn Nicholas, Zavier Leverson-Nicholas, Lux Andrew Haynes, Zoey Leverson-Nicholas, and Sahana Kirkland; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many sorrowing friends including devoted friends, Maude Grey, Curtis Simmons and Reverend James Merritt.

A Life Remembered: In remembering Betty Jean Robinson, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life marked by deep faith in God, steadfast dedication to her church and community, and a legacy of love, wisdom, and joy. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit, teachings, and warmth live on in all who knew and loved her.

“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 5:8
