Deaconess Laverne Whitten Obituary

Deaconess Laverne Dowdell Whitten, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend was born on December 31, 1940, in DeSoto, Georgia, and she departed this life on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida. She lived a life of love, faith, and service, leaving behind a profound legacy that will forever be cherished by all who knew her.

Laverne was the daughter of Grant and Florine Dowdell and grew up with a strong sense of family and community. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, along with her brothers, Grant Jr., Lee, and Gennie, and her sisters Bea and Nona Ruth. Laverne will also be reunited in spirit with her beloved husband, Reverend Curtis Whitten, Jr., who she cherished deeply throughout their life together.

Laverne is survived by her six children, who were the light of her life: Amanda Dowdell, Curtis Whitten (Tara), Nathaniel Whitten (Dorothea), Stockton Whitten, Gilbert Whitten (Kimberly), and Julia Whitten. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, who brought her endless joy: Tiah, Deon, Carlinn, Crystal, Lil Curtis, Lil Stockton, Alden, Arrie, Nicholas, Corey, Jazmine, Cerynity, Taiven, Taliah, Taidan, Takara, Taz, Terry, and Conan. She also leaves behind her siblings, Annette Dowdell-Hubbard, Katherine Dowdell-Lowe, Albert, and Silas Dowdell, as well as former daughters-in-law, Belinda Whitten and Kathy Whitten, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many sorrowing friends.

Laverne a devoted Southern Baptist, was a faithful member of Greater Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. Her contributions to the church were many; she served as the President of the Missionary Society, a member of the Women’s Ministry, a teacher for Sunday School Class #9, a chaplain in the Deaconess Ministry, and a cherished member of the Gospel Choir. Laverne was also involved with the Eastern Star, exemplifying her commitment to faith and service.

In her leisure time, Laverne found joy in her musical talents, often playing the harmonica and guitar, filling the hearts of those around her with her love for music. Her hobbies were a reflection of her warm spirit, and she often shared this passion with family and friends, creating beautiful memories that will linger in their hearts forever.

Laverne Dowdell Whitten lived her life with grace, compassion, and unwavering faith. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire generations. She will be missed dearly, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
