Mother Dr. Ruth Baldwin Britton was born on November 15, 1936, to proud parents Robert Henry and Pattie Selina Baldwin in Hastings, Florida. In 1953 she graduated from Walter E. Harris High School and in 1965 she moved to New York City, New York to earn a degree in nursing. She relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where she married Deacon Milo C. Britton, Jr. on May 15, 1967. Through this union, a blended family was formed.
Dr. Britton accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1949. The Lord led her to Refuge Church of Our Lord on 26th and Chase Streets where Apostle Dr. Gentle Groover, Sr., was the Pastor. On January 21, 1976, she received the gift of the Holy Ghost and was baptized in Water in Jesus’ Name. Mother Britton was a member of Southside Refuge Church of Our Lord, Pastor Bishop Dr. Derrick M. Roberts, Sr.
Dr. Britton lived a life that included continuous education, accomplishments, and leadership roles. She earned four doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Philosophy of Arts Degree in Christian Counseling from Zoe University, a Doctor of Philosophy Degree as a Licensed Clinical Christian Psychologist, a Ph.D. from Cornerstone University, and a Doctor of Philosophy as a Clinical Christian Psychologist from the Florida Association of Christian Counselors and Therapists, and Ph.D. in Mental Health from Northfield University. Mother Britton was the Founder of A New Christian Counseling Center. She held memberships with the National Christian Counselors Association, Charter Member of Zoe University, Jacksonville Alliance for the Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy, Regional Director of the Florida Association of Christian Counselors, and Jacksonville Juvenile Justice Counsel. She authored two publications: “Marriage Can Work For You”, and “Faith, What it Means To You”. She served in leadership roles including, Missionary President, Mother’s Board President, Women Council Sisterhood, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Usher Board President, Youth Department Supporter, and an Advisor to many.
Dr. Britton was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Tony Taylor and Darryl Britton; siblings, Willie Baldwin, Bessie Lewis, Robert Baldwin Jr., Jessie Baldwin, Freda Wilson, and James Baldwin; and nephews, Kenneth Baldwin and James Alexander.
Dr. Britton leaves to mourn her passing but to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted husband, Deacon Milo C. Britton, Jr.; children, Larry & Joyce Britton, Laveta Britton, Brenda Stafford, Terry Britton, Fred & Norma Waters, Robin Simmons, Kevin Jones, Carla Daniels, Anthony & Carol Britton, Ysryl, Kim Williams, Steven & Lashawnda Floyd, Dr. Kelvin & Vivian Wiley, and Geneva McNair; nephews and nieces, George & Lisa Alexander and Family, Claretha Alexander and Family, and the Oxendine Family; cousins, Agnes McDonald and Johnny & Sandy Bryant; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; spiritual daughters and special friends, Lucille Thomas, Bobbie Simpo, Doris Jackson, Nanice Floyd, Mona Sanders, Dominique Sanders, Linda Henry, Margaret Frazier, Pamela Blount, Sabrina Scott, Addris Vinson, and Florence Rosenberg.
