Hazel Lee Butler was born on November 20, 1945, in Ocala, Florida, to James and Elouise Butler. Her mother wanted the then renowned Dr. Nathaniel Jones to deliver her first baby girl. Hazel was born with a thick “satin cap” which grew into a beautiful “mane” sported throughout life.
Though suffering from a birth defect, Hazel loved conversing with others. During a trip to Boston, he shared quips with Wellesley Professor Ifeany Menkiti. He delighted in her charming, open, and warm personality. Hazel enjoyed being outside in the Florida sun among trees and playing in the sand.
As a client of ARC, Hazel loved long walks holding hands and smiling with friends. Hazel exemplified the love of God through tribulations, no matter what. As she endured lengthy hospital stays, her spirit of vivacity never dwindled. The prolonged tests and other procedures only pushed Hazel to get well enough to return home. She was blessed to have the comfort and immeasurable love of her brothers and sisters.
Hazel is survived by her brothers, Benny (Frankie) and Gerald, and sisters Gwendolyn (who served as her caregiver) and Val (Jerry), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Do not weep for Hazel Butler. She is deliriously happy! After a long journey here, she would rather be with her parents and brothers, Walter and Pop, who proceeded her in death. To God be the Glory.
