It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hazel King Shuman, who left this world on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on October 17, 1949, in Jacksonville, Florida, Hazel was a beacon of love and resilience throughout her life, lighting the way for her family and friends.
Hazel was the cherished daughter of Tom W. King and Gussie B. King, who preceded her in death along with her beloved brothers, Tony, Lawrence, Ralph, and Walter King, and her sister, Annette King. Despite these losses, Hazel’s spirit remained indomitable. She was married to Napoleon Shuman for twenty-one beautiful years, a partnership filled with love, respect, and mutual support.
Hazel was a proud mother, leaving behind her beloved children, Gregory Shuman (Marcelle) and Roderick Shuman. She extended her love to her bonus children, Harvey Shuman, Randy Shuman, and Sherry Shuman, creating a blended family that reflected her generous heart. A devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, she cherished a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each one a testament to her legacy of love.
She is also survived by her sister, Jeannette Durham Smith, and a caring network of in-laws, including Ruby King, Jonathan Shuman (Kathleen), Dorothy Wells, and Cora Lindsey (William). Special names in her life, such as Renee Durham, Rahnisha Hall, Stepheny Durham, and Sylvia Johnson, along with a multitude of other loving family members and friends, will carry her memory forward.
Hazel’s education was a source of pride for her; she graduated from Stanton Vocational High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Edward Waters College. Her career as a social worker with the State of Florida Department of Children and Family Services for thirty-five was marked by her dedication to helping others, a reflection of her compassionate nature.
A devoted member of the African Universal Baptist Church, Hazel’s faith and community involvement were integral to her life. She embraced every opportunity to serve others, embodying the love and strength she wished to instill in those around her.
Although Hazel had many interests and hobbies, her greatest joy came from the moments spent with family and friends, where laughter and love were always abundant.
Hazel King Shuman was a remarkable woman—a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her unwavering strength and kindness touched countless lives, and she will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
