James Henry Mitchell entered into sweet rest Early Morning, Monday, March 24, 2025. James was born on March 8, 1943, to Thomas and Elizabeth Mitchell in Callahan, Florida.
James was a graduate of the class of 1961 from Pine Forest Community High School. After graduating from High School, James enlisted in the United States Arms where he served for two years. On one of his leaves, he came home and married his high school sweetheart, Marva Salena Simmons on December 26, 1962, and to that union they were blessed with four children.
James worked ten years at St. Regis Box Mill. After that he was hired at Metal Container, where he worked until retirement. James was known as a hummingbird. He had a gift of singing and he used his voice for the glory of God. He sang with the Callahan City Wide Male Chorus for many years until his health started failing him.
James loved sports. He loved watching and playing in his younger years. He was a member of New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Callahan where he served faithfully after becoming a member until his health failed.
James was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell; sisters, Francis Mitchell, Queen Williams, Mildred Davis and Carolyn Williams; brother, Thomas Mitchell, Jr.; son, Ronald Odell Hamilton; two grandsons, Tari and Nicholas; one great grandson, Jaquan.
James leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of sixty-two years, Marva Mitchell; children, Gregory Mitchell, Shonna Wells (James), Anthony Mitchell (Tonya) and James Mitchell, Jr.; sisters, Narene Raulerson (Lovette) and Maxine Simmons; brothers, Delvin Mitchell and Harold Davis; two sisters-in-law, Joann Baker (Bernard and Eleanor Moore; four brothers-in-law, Arnold Simmons (Lynn), Everett Simmons, Richard Simmons and Ronald Simmons; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; two godsons, Ivory Pete Melton and Broderick Green; a special nephew, Ivan Mitchell (Liz); special thanks to Vitas Hospice Care and Carrie Mattair, RN for her caregiving; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
