Janice Scott Obituary

Janice Elmira Scott, affectionately known as Janie, Janie Mae, Mama J, was born on April 9, 1954 in Atlantic City, New Jersey to James “Dick” Emerson McDuffie and Louise Manning. At the age of 2, her family moved from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Jacksonville, Florida where she attended school at Douglas Anderson.

She was a woman of many talents including Cook, Cosmetologist, Seamstress, and Childcare Provider. It was the latter, in which she was most passionate about.  Having lost her mother at the tender age of nine, she felt that no child should be without their mom.  So, she turned her pain into purpose and became the owner/operator of Mama J’s Home Daycare for nearly 30 years. Her focus was never about money but rather offering affordable childcare to deserving families. During that time, she raised and cared for hundreds of infants, toddlers, and children. Her love and commitment to caring for children was undeniably genuine.

Janice’s proudest accomplishment was the love she had for her husband, children, family, and friends. On March 5, 1993, she married the love of her life, Anthony Scott. The two would have celebrated 28 years or marriage on March 5, 2021. She was such a proud and supportive mother, having given birth to and raised six children, Cornell McDuffie, Ericka Antoinette Woods, Herman James Felton, Jr., Michele Nicole Davis, Allison Sheree Buie, and Tiffany Danieulle Jackson as well as a niece/daughter, Lorraine Marie Gilmore. She later became mom to her bonus children, Anthony “Tony” O. Bryan Scott, Shanicka Eckols and Breland Scott. Janice also loved and admired her siblings, Izell Bo Harris, Jr. and Queen Elizabeth Gross, for their strength. After her mother’s death, she was taken in by her aunt, Helen Mae Simpo and would forge a strong bond with her cousins/sisters, Elizabeth Faye McClendon and Janice “Pinky” Marie Grogan. In her adulthood she developed a lasting friendship with her best friends, Yvonne Pearson, Deborah Sheffield, Valencia Matthews, Carolyn “Lynette” Taylor, and Betty Jean Sullivan.

On Monday, January 25, 2021, at 7:12pm, Janice departed this life to take up residence in the prepared place that our Lord and Savior reserved for her. She transitioned at Baptist Medical Center. Janice was preceded in death by mother, Louise Manning; father, James “Dick” Emerson McDuffie; and sister, Queen Elizabeth Gross.

Janice leaves to cherish her memories, she is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Anthony Scott; her children, Cornell McDuffie (Tansla), Ericka Antoinette Woods, Herman James Felton, Jr. (Katherine), Michele Nicole Davis (Timothy, Sr.), Allison Sheree Buie (Christopher Sr.), and Tiffany Danieulle Jackson (Harold, Sr.); step children, Anthony “Tony” O.
