Jeannette Durham Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, departed this world on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Born on November 1, 1947, Jeannette was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege to know her.
Jeannette was the cherished daughter of Tom W. King and Gussie B. King. She grew up in Jacksonville, where she was deeply rooted in her family and community. Jeannette attended the Public Schools of Duval County, proudly graduating from New Stanton High School. She went on to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor's Degree with a double major in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Edward Waters College. This academic achievement was a testament to her dedication and commitment to understanding and advocating for her community.
Professionally, Jeannette had a long and rewarding career with the State of Florida, from which she eventually retired. Her work was characterized by her genuine desire to serve and uplift others, a quality that endeared her to her colleagues and those she assisted.
Jeannette's life was rich with love and family. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Andre L. Durham, Sr.; her father, Tom W. King; her mother, Gussie B. King; and her brothers, Tony King, Lawrence King, Ralph King, Walter King, and Rudolph King. She also mourned the loss of her sisters, Annette King, Hazel King Shuman, Mary Jordan, and Sharon Jordan. Their absence left a profound impact on her life, but their memories remained a source of strength and inspiration.
Despite her losses, Jeannette's spirit was unyielding. She is survived by her devoted children, Stepheny Durham, III (Carmelita) and Renee Durham, who were her pride and joy. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Tiesha Fields (Johnathan), Andre Durham, Jr. (Alisha), Ceteria Johnson, Andre'a Durham, Rahnisha Rivers (Sedric), Stepheny Durham, IV, and Cherish Durham. Each of them carries a piece of her heart and her unwavering love.
In addition to her immediate family, Jeannette is survived by her siblings, Pastor Dr. Annie Mae Massey, Shirley Warren, Eddy Alvarez (Patrick), Walter Terry, Edward Terry, and Dr. Nadine Lawrence. She held her in-laws close to her heart, including Rose Mary Wells (Jerry), Charles Durham, Sr. (Diane), and Ruby King. Jeannette's family also expanded through the love she shared with her bonus children, Deltra Davis, David Dixon (Debra), and Jessica Dixon.
Jeannette was not only a devoted family matriarch, but she also nurtured a rich social life. She was an active member of the African Universal Baptist Church, where she found spiritual solace and connection. Her involvement in the Eastern Star and the Women Central Social and Saving Club showcased her commitment to service and community. As an honorary member of the Diva Stylez Girlfriends Sisterhood Society, she fostered friendships that brought joy and laughter to her life.
Jeannette's warm spirit, kindness, and generosity touched countless lives. She had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel cherished and valued. Her laughter was infectious, and her wisdom profound. She created a loving home filled with warmth, compassion, and support, where everyone felt welcome.
As we remember Jeannette Durham Smith, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life dedicated to family, education, community service, and the unwavering love she gave to those around her. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, siblings, and all who had the honor of knowing her.
