On November 11, 2025, John Davit Ervin Jr., 69, transitioned peacefully while at Brooks Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville, Florida. John, known to his family as “Davit” and to friends and colleagues as “JD,” lived with purpose, determination, confidence, and strength that never wavered.
John grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the second of four children to John (JD) Davit Ervin Sr. and Martha (Naomi) Louise Ervin. John cared deeply for his family as a whole. He valued connection and had a natural way of creating space for closeness, laughter, and support. He carried this same love into his friendships, showing up, staying connected, and building relationships that lasted.
Learning was an essential part of John’s life as well. In 1991 he earned his Associates Degree from Greater New Haven State Technical College, in 2023 his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia State University and in 2025, he would have completed his Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus in Special Education also at Georgia State. His drive to learn and grow was constant.
He spent many years working in the technology field. However, his greatest professional fulfillment came from teaching. Most recently as a science teacher at Stephenson High School in DeKalb County Georgia, he poured himself into his students’ academic progress and personal well-being.
John is preceded in transition by his devoted parents. He is held in loving memory by his son, Nathaniel John Ervin, “Hoss,” his right arm and the person whose love shaped so much of who he was. His cherished grandchildren: Enzo, Estello, and Eleanor. His sisters, Janet Ervin-McCoy, Jocelyn Ervin, and Jeannine Ervin White, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will feel his absence deeply.
When asked recently how people would describe him, John offered five words: chill, supportive, kind, motivated, and fun. Anyone who knew him would agree. We are grateful for his life, his love, and the quiet dignity he carried. John’s legacy continues through his son, his grandchildren, his family, and all those who were touched by his presence and the memories he leaves behind.
A tribute to his life is being planned by his family and will be communicated in the coming months.
