Mother Katherine Demps was born on January 11, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was the oldest sibling of the union of Julia Graham-Demps and Lockett Demps. She was reared by her loving grandparents, Jackson Thomas Graham and Sarah Elizabeth Buggs Graham.
Mother Demps received her education at Douglas Anderson and Old Stanton High School where she received her high school diploma; in Jacksonville, Florida. She also attended the Junior College in Jacksonville. She grew up on the southside and was a member of Southside Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop James Hinsley where she accepted Christ as her Savior at a very young age.
In the early 1950’s, Mother Demps fell in love with New York City, New York while visiting and soon after, made it her home. She was a gracious host and often opened her home to her family and friends to visit. Upon moving to New York, she joined and served faithfully in ministry at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in New York City. She was progressive for her era and she sought out educational opportunities. Her employment over the years included numerous occupations that included housekeeping and a lab technician for Albert Einstein Medical School in the Bronx, New York. Her incredible love for ministry and desire to travel afforded her the opportunity to engage in the ministry of missions and global travel. Several years after retiring from her secular occupation, she moved back to Jacksonville, Florida.
Mother Katherine Demps transitioned on Friday, October 16, 2020 at Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville while in Hospice. Those who preceded her in death are her mother, Julia Graham-Demps; father, Lockett Demps; seven siblings, Theodore Demps, Naomi McCray, Clarence Johnny Demps, Rosalyn Chapmon-Randolph, Johnny Chapmon, Melvin Demps and Cato Demps.
Those left to cherish her memories are her siblings, Charles Demps (Elizabeth), Theresa Chapmon Stanford (Robert), Hiram Chapmon, Christian Demps Wilbert, Joan Demps Countryman and Barbara Demps Hart; her beloved nieces, Thelma Demps-Rigby, Constance McCrary-House, Julia Elizabeth Demps-Wilson and Trenesa Danuser; and nephew, Tracy Grant; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
