Martha Brown Obituary

On December 12, 1933, John and Lillie Mae Dukes welcomed Martha Louise into the world in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1951 and subsequently obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida A&M University in 1956. That same year marked the commencement of her teaching career at Douglas Anderson.

On June 30, 1957, Martha married Clyde W. Brown. Her commitment to education led her to Pine Forest Elementary School and Lone Star Elementary, where she dedicated over thirty-three years of teaching service before retiring in July 1992.

Martha actively participated in professional associations, including Duval’s Teachers Union and the Retired Educators Association.

A devoted member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church throughout her life, Martha fulfilled various roles within the church community, serving as Church Secretary, Vice Chairman of the Administrative Board, and President of the Stewardess Board She was also an engaged member of the United Methodist Women.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lillie Mae Dukes; her husband, Clyde W. Brown; and her siblings, Kathleen Dukes Brooks, Bertha Dukes Deloney, Thelma Epps, Mack Dukes, and Willie L. Dukes.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela B. Costoso (Luis); her grandchildren, Ebony N. Brooks and Luis A. Costoso Jr.; her great-grandson, Mekhi E. Jackson; nieces, Alberta Anderson, Carolyn Dukes Haynes, Patricia Snead, and Debbie Dukes; nephew, Jeffery Dukes (Elizabeth);  and a host of other relatives, all of whom hold her memory dear.
