Mrs. Mary Jane Murray Curtis was born to the late Reverend Francis and Irene Murray on May 1, 1933 in Nassauville, Florida. She was twelfth of thirteen siblings, and her father baptized her at the age of fourteen at New Hope Baptist Church, where he pastored in Chester, Florida. She was educated in Duval County schools and graduated from Old Stanton High School Class of 1951. She was married to Raymond Curtis for a number of years.
Mary relocated to Brooklyn, New York and attended Business School. She worked for Better Made Headwear in the Accounting Department. She united with New Gethsemane Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Choir until she returned to Jacksonville, Florida.
After returning home, Mary worked for United States Gypsum in the Accounting Department until retiring in 1998. She was a member of Sweetfield Baptist Church until uniting with Dayspring Baptist Church in 1982. She was a faithful member of Dayspring where she exhibited her love for God and people by singing in the choir and serving as the Choir Chairperson for many years. She was active in the Women’s Ministry, Senior Ministry, Sunday School and midweek Bible Study. She served the Lord and her church for many years.
Mary loved to cook especially the best sweet potato pies which were a special treat for family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling, especially cruising. She was a Charter Member and season ticket holder of the Jacksonville Jaguars for thirty years. “GO JAGS”.
Mary Jane Curtis entered eternal rest on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents; eleven siblings; and nephew/son, Vincent Murray.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving sister, Q. Mabel Kimble; niece/daughter, Zandra Woodbury; special niece, Charlene McGriff; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
