Mattie Jewel Currelley was born May 5, 1933 in Headland, Alabama to Willie Hollis and Alice Tommie Lee Haynes. She was educated in the local schools of Alabama, then relocated to Jacksonville, Florida with her mother.
Mattie worked at Southside Country Day School and as a domestic worker for the Shaw Family for many years. She later met and married Billy Currelley, then later joined First Missionary Baptist Church where she was baptized under the leadership of Rev. H.H. Wright. Mattie sang in the church choir and functioned on the usher board.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Hollis and Alice Tommie Lee Hollis; husband, Billy Currelley; sisters Lillie B. Jackson and Ollie B. Jackson; and brother, Willies E. Hollis (Bubba).
Mattie leaves to cherish her precious memories children she raised, Terry Hollis, Adrean Hollis (deceased), Cheryl Hollis-Smith, Barbara Hollis and Patricka Thomas; sister-in-law, Rosa Mae Hollis; special nieces, Cynthia Jennifer (Clarence) Maryland and Gail Bryant (Robert); special friends, Arleatha Randolph and Elnara Russell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sorrowing friends.
