Melba Badger Obituary

Melba Joyce Badger peacefully entered eternal rest on Monday May 18, 2026, surrounded by the warmth of the family she loved so dearly. Born on December 21, 1948, Melba was a foundational beacon of light, warmth, and unyielding devotion to everyone who crossed her path.

As a deeply dedicated member of the Badger family, Melba’s heart was defined by her selflessness. She spent the majority of her adult life lovingly and meticulously caring for her parents, the late Solomon Lockey Badger, Jr. and Susan Moffitt Badger; embodying the true essence of an honorable, devoted caretaker.

Answering a higher standard of achievement, Joyce was truly a "pacesetter" and a "groundbreaker" throughout her journey; etching her name beautifully into history. Breaking visual and social barriers of segregation in Jacksonville, she made history as the first Black employee at Calhoun's Friendly 5 & 10 Cents Store in Mixon-town and went on to become the first Black salesperson at Mangle's Women's Apparel Store in Downtown Jacksonville. A 1966 graduate of Stanton High School and a 1971 graduate of Florida A&M University, Melba made good use of her education.

Her trailblazing path continued as she stood among the very first wave of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) graduates to be hand-selected and hired as an Airline Stewardess - taking her grace and professionalism to the skies with Delta Airlines.

Closer to home, she poured her leadership into the community as a Field Director for the Gateway Girl Scouts House with the Girl Scouts of America. Her sharp attention to detail and organizational excellence also shone brightly during her tenure as a clerical supervisor, where she managed an innovative record-keeping system for University Hospital (UF).

Melba’s vibrant nature, exceptional intellect, and professional capability led her through a rich, multifaceted career. Over the years, she managed finances with excellence as a bank manager, contributed her technical talents to Lucent Technologies, and ultimately retired from the Jacksonville Transit Authority.

She was universally admired for her radiant smile, sharp wit, and bubbly personality. She was adored beyond measure by her siblings, Barbara Bing, James K. Badger (deceased) (Ann M), Dr. Solomon L. Badger III, Dr. Erma Mitchell, and Brenda Cusack; nieces, Glonda W. Sims, Semaj Badger, Karen Cusack, and Je’Nah Bing-Wilson (Robert); nephews, Cal Walton Jr. (Veronica Ann), Stephen Badger, Dr. L. Michael Badger, Royce B. Badger (Wilma), Rev. Kenneth Solomon Badger (Ramona), and Myron Mitchell; grand-nieces, Jasmyne Mitchell, Ayja Cusack, Taccara Marzette, Destiny Samuel, Alexis McAfee, and Adrienne Caldwell; grand-nephews, Marcus Odum (Terica), Javan Reed, Cal Walton III, Royce Badger Jr., Brian Walton, Karl McLendon Jr., Kaleb McLendon, Bryce Badger, Devin Humphrey, Camilo Woods, and Kendel Badger; great-grand niece, Ja’Nyla Mays; a loyal longtime friend, Constance DeVaughn, and a vast host of cousins and extended family members.
