Our dear mother Ms. Marie Chandler sadly passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at the age of 95 surrounded by her family at her bedside. She was born to the proud parents of the late Griffin and Florida Mae Long. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her. She was a well-loved member of the Jacksonville, Florida community after relocating at an early age from her hometown, Dothan Alabama.
Mother’s membership at Saint Matthew Baptist Church was an honor. As she respected “her Reverend Price” to the utmost. She would be so excited when he surprisingly delivered goodies to her home. Mother married her handsome Navy Sailor the late Mr. T.V. Chandler. The two of them remained inseparable friends until his demise in 1993. Mother’s twenty-two-year tenure with the Duval County School Board began after she raised her children.
“Our Angel, you guided us in darkness, lifted us when we fell, and showered us with unconditional love”. Our mother was the best “Momma” anyone could ask for or be born to. Her concern for others, caring spirit, love, kindness and generosity extended far beyond her family. Mother’s departure this close to Thanksgiving leaves an unimaginable void in our hearts. As she made the best Turkey and Dressing, Mac ‘N’ Cheese and cakes. A lot to be grateful for!!!
Our mother’s age of 95 is a testament of a Life well lived. Five of her children preceded her in death. Although, Mom was blessed with seven daughters, she never learned to do our tresses; thank goodness for her sister the late Aggie Long. We thought we were the “Apple of mom’s eye” as her children, until, oh my, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were born, especially the boys. Mother dearly loved her family, her friends and our friends. All whom she enjoyed spending time with. Talking on the phone with her friends while watching The Price is Right, Let’s Make A Deal and Family Feud entertained her spirit and mind.
We will deeply miss our momma. However, great joy shall prevail in our hearts through II Corinthians 5:8. Mother was preceded in death by her parents, Griffin and Florida Mae Long; children, Vernon, Marvin, Angelia, Betty and Shaune Chandler; sister, Aggie B. Long; brothers, Blumer Long (Emma Jean) and Willie Long (Thelma); sons-in-law, Wilbert Wiggins, Sr. and Harry Brown.
Mother is survived by her daughters, Ms. Delores Wiggins, Ms. Annie Marie Stevens, Ms. Paula Brown (Kite) and Ms. Gail Chandler; grandchildren, Van (Tacarra), Wilbert Jr., Toosdai, Ke, Christy, Wiley (Hege), Nardia, Quynton, Marvin Jr and Dee; great grandchildren, Chelsea, Chandler, William, Christopher, Brittany (Phillip), Briana, Noah, Brandon, Elijah, Isiah, Chles, Cree, Christian, Chloe and Aspen; sorrowing friends, Ms. Vernita Alexander, Ms. Bertha Richardson, Ms. Clara Freeney, Ms. Elnora Russell, Ms. Anna Mae Richardson, Ms. Armenia Green, Ms. Vetrice Williams, Mr. Tom Ansley, Mr. Virgil Brown, Ms. Frances Ford, Ms. Mamie Bryant, Ms. Eula Bronner and Mr. John Dent; special caregiver, Ms. Sylvia Officer; and a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
