Artis James Williams was born on June 29, 1949 in Jacksonville, Florida to Celestine V. Jacobs and Otis J. Williams. He received his early education in the public schools of Duval County, graduating from New Stanton High School- Class of 1969.
Artis took an interest in Criminal Justice, first working as an officer with the Department of Corrections, before pursuing a career as a Policeman with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. He retired from JSO in 2004, after 30 years of dedicated service. Artis’ hobbies were photography, carpentry and home improvement. He was a man of few words with a heart of gold.
In 1976, he was blessed with his first child, a son, Kenyatta. In 1977, he fathered his first daughter, Kendra. Artis and Arlene Coles, wed in 1986. From this union, he was blessed with another daughter, Celeste in 1987.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a son, Kenyatta Jordan; daughters, Kendra Green and Celeste V. Williams; stepchildren, Glenna Coles, Jermaine Coles and Andre Coles; grandchildren, Jor’el Green, Kennard Green, Jerrard Green and Khalil Green; siblings, Jerome Elps Jr., Fostine Randolph, Elaine Franklin (Eldridge Franklin) and Shelia Gayle; nine loving nieces and nephews, a host of friends and longtime devoted friend, Janis Campbell.
