Retired Officer Derrell Hills Obituary

Retired JSO Officer Derrell Cornelius Hills was born in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Israel Hills, Sr. and Doris Young-Hills on January 14, 1959. He received his education in the local schools of Duval County, graduating from Samuel W. Wolfson High School in 1977.

Derrell then went on to serve 4 years in the United States Army. In April of 1983, Derrell started his career as a police officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, serving 26 years before retiring in 2010 as a detective.

In 1985, Derrell met Linda Diane Day and they married on May 23, 1987. Within 35 years of marriage, they had two beautiful daughters born to their union, Darelynn and Deidra and was later blessed with three grandchildren, Zamiyah, Zariah, and Zayden.

Derrell was a faithful and dedicated servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a caring, faithful, loving husband, and loved his children and grandchildren like no other. He was a “man’s man” who believed in the value of hard work, which is evident in his professional career. He provided abundantly for his family and always willing to help anyone in need. Known for his love of sports, cars, golden smile with dimples to match, his calm demeanor and gentle ways. Rather you called him Derrell, D.C., or Deca, he was a beautiful soul and will truly be missed.

Derrell Cornelius Hills went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 30, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Israel Hills, Sr.; his sister, Patricia Smithson; and brother, Israel Hills, Jr.

Derrell leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Linda Hills; two daughters, Darelynn Hills and Deidra Hills; a loving mother, Doris Hills; his remaining siblings that will cherish his memory, Beverly Crutchfield (Albert), Veronica Warren (James), Cynthia Hughes (Charles), Sylvester Hills, Jennifer Hills-Blake, Deloris Hills-Shubert, and Bernadette Hills; grandchildren, Zamiyah Beard, Zariah Johnson, and Zayden Beard; close friends, Ronald D. Armalin, Sr., Robert ‘Bobby’ Drummond, Jr., Brian Jefferson, Wesley Rolack, Retha Smith and Juanita "JJ" Dixon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many sorrowing friends.
