During this time, he began a relationship with Marvette Benjamin.

After being honorably discharged, he continued his education at Central Carolina Community College, where he earned his degree in Fiber Optics. After graduating, he worked at IBM and Sumitomo Corp, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Richard relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in 1994, where he married his wife, Marvette. He was employed at Prudential Life, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, and Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Jacksonville, Fl.
