With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Bruce Wilson, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world on Monday, June 9, 2025, at the age of 99. Born on March 2, 1936, in New York City, New York, Robert lived a full and enriching life that spanned nearly a century, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Robert was the cherished son of Walter Wilson and Lucille Host, who nurtured his early years with love and guidance. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Arthur Wilson, Melbourne Wilson, Helen Edwards, Delores Webster, Clara Nelson, Leona Woodson, Kenneth Wilson, and Richard Wilson. Their memories were a constant source of inspiration for him, and he carried their love in his heart throughout his life.
A proud veteran, Robert honorably served in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that imbued him with discipline and a strong sense of duty. Upon returning home, he pursued his education in the local schools of New York, eventually graduating from George Washington High School. His career was marked by hard work and dedication, starting as a Postal Worker with the United States Postal Service, he later went on to be a cab driver in New York City. Robert then found work as a Train Conductor with the New York City Transit, before moving on to the New York City Health and Hospitals. Whatever the job, Robert approached his work with a steadfast commitment and a sense of pride.
On January 6, 1957, Robert married his soulmate the former Mary Frances McCall, and together they built a loving marriage that lasted for over seven decades. Their partnership was a testament to love, resilience, and the joy of family life. He is survived by Mary and their four children, Lynda Gee (Ricky), Sylvia Hockaday (Elliott), Robert Bruce Wilson, Jr., and Donald Wilson (Dionne). Robert was a devoted father, and he took great pride in his children, always supporting their dreams and endeavors.
As a grandfather, Robert’s heart expanded further to embrace his grandchildren: Jason Wilson, Darrell Killebrew, Odell Killebrew, Nicole Wilson-Mclean, Kristopher Killebrew, Trevis Wilson, Akem Killebrew, Davon Wilson, Isaiah Wilson and Shane Perry. Each grandchild held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in sharing stories, laughter, and wisdom with them. He is also survived by his sister, Gladys Hickenbotton, a niece, Cynthia Hickenbotton, a host of great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many sorrowing friends who will miss his warmth and kindness.
Robert was not just a provider but also a thinker and a doer. In his leisure time, he passionately enjoyed fixing electronics and tackling intricate 3D puzzles, reflecting his inquisitive mind and methodical nature. His hands were never idle; he found peace and satisfaction in creating and repairing, sharing this joy with family and friends who often marveled at his skills.
Though Robert’s life journey has concluded in Jacksonville, Florida, his spirit, wisdom, and love will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and the importance of family.
As we say goodbye to Robert Bruce Wilson, Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived—filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to family. May he rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
