Sheldon Mario Shoemaker departed his earthly life on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at his home. He was born on February 5, 1963, to Julia Mae Whitten and Homer Shoemaker, Sr. in Jacksonville, Florida. Today we honor a life well lived. A life of service, adventure, and devotion came to a peaceful close with the passing of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and patriot.
Born with a natural gift for mathematics, he dreamed of becoming an engineer and set his sights on Georgia Tech. When an acceptance letter didn't arrive by his self-imposed deadline, he made a decision that would define the course of his remarkable life—he enlisted in the United States Air Force. What might have seemed like a detour became his destiny. Sheldon selflessly served his country with honor for twenty years as a Technical Sergeant (TSgt) and retired to North Carolina.
As an aircraft mechanic, he proved himself an essential part of the mission, serving with distinction across five continents. His military journey took him from the historic landscapes of Europe to the vibrant cultures of Central America, from the ancient crossroads of the Middle East to the diverse nations of Asia and Africa. Each assignment broadened his understanding of the world and deepened his commitment to service.
But it was while being stationed in North Carolina that fate delivered its greatest gift. There, he met the woman who would become not just his wife, but his best friend and partner for thirty-nine extraordinary years, Laura. Their love story was one of laughter, loyalty, and unwavering support through all of life's seasons.
From their union on December 29, 1985, came his greatest joy, his beloved daughter, Katienne, whom he adored beyond measure. He was her champion, her protector, and her greatest fan. Whether celebrating her victories or supporting her through challenges, he showed up with unconditional love and pride. His devotion to her never wavered from the day she was born until the day he departed this earthly life. During football season, Sheldon could be found cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers who he shared with his baby girl!
Though he began his journey seeking to work on aircrafts, he built something far more lasting—a legacy of service, a marriage rooted in true friendship, and a father's love that will echo through generations.
Sheldon was preceded in death by his father, Homer Shoemaker; mother, Julia Whitten Fralin; and sisters, Cassandra Pugh and Alnetia Patterson.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Laura; cherished daughter, Katienne; a grandson, Namari; mother-in-law, Katie Williams, who loved him like a son; sisters, Felecia Whitten, Katrell Hughes, Dionne Fralin, and La Shon Palmer (Phil); brothers, Homer Shoemaker, Jr. (Debbie), Keith George (Sharwanda), Jamie Fralin (Angela), and Sterling Fralin; sister-in-law, LaWanda Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
As we are left here to process this immense loss, we will carry forward the values he lived by dedication, integrity, and an open heart toward the world and all its possibilities. His was a life well-lived, measured not in the places he saw or the years he served, but in the love, he gave and the lives he touched.
