Silas Horace Reed was born on January 3, 1955, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Bishop Herman F. Reed and Minnie Lee Reed. He graduated from Stanton Senior High School in 1973 and went on to live a life filled with hard work, love, and dedication to his family.
Throughout his career, Silas worked for a number of companies, including Pepsi, JM Family, Tom Bush BMW, and Reed's Construction. However, his happiest times were when he ran his own business, Reed’s Team, where he found true fulfillment.
Known by many nicknames, such as Silky, Pop, or simply "Dad" to his children, Silas was a man who enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He loved fishing, bowling, spending quality time with his family, BBQing, relaxing at the beach, attending church, and savoring a delicious meal. And let’s not forget, he always had a fondness for fine clothes and shoes.
Above all, Silas was the sweetest, most respectful, and God-fearing man. Though he has left us too soon, we take comfort knowing that he is in a better place. He had a deep love for travel and would often drive long distances for his trips—his longest being from Dania, Florida, to Houston, Texas.
Throughout his life, Silas was connected to several churches. He was raised in the Church of Lord Jesus Christ Apostolic Faith, under the leadership of his father, the late Bishop Herman F. Reed. Most recently, he became a member of Tru Way Church of The Risen Christ in Jacksonville, Florida, where he was under the leadership of Bishop-Elect Elwyn W. Jenkins. Silas will forever be remembered as a loving father, a devoted man of faith, and a friend to all who knew him.
Silas was preceded in death by his loving father and mother, Bishop Herman F. Reed and Mother Minnie Lee Reed; brothers and sisters, Herman Reed Jr., John Reed, Shirley Reed, Willie Reed, Minnie Reed-Bartley, and Nathaniel Reed.
Silas is survived by his children, Silas V. Reed Jr., Michelle A. Upson (Johnnie) and Renee Dunham (Derrick); grandchildren, Alexander Johnson, Peyton Upson and Israel Dunham; great grandson, Axel Johnson; aunt, Essie Reed Pye; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
