Tommy Gartrell Obituary

Tommy Gartrell better known as “Lonnie” was born to the late Willie Lee Gartrell Hill on October 29, 1941 in Tignall, Georgia. He attended public school in Duval County. At a young age, his need to care his younger siblings took presence in his life. He accepted Christ at an early age and has always affectionately loved the Lord. He married the late Joyce Mayhew, a union of thirty-one years and together they had four beautiful daughters.

Tommy started his career as a welder for the local shipyards for more than fifteen years, he later became a truck driver for Fraden’s Produce where he offered ten years of dedicated service, and he later retired from the International Longshoreman Association in 2007.

Tommy’s life expressed the protecting, strong, caring, big-hearted person he was and will continue to be in our hearts always and forever.

Tommy was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Lee Gartrell Hill; and siblings, Tyrone Dixon, Doris Collins, Louis Hill and Timothy Hill.

Tommy leaves to cherish memories, his children, Nancy Hill, Jackie Hill, Tracy Dorsey (Louis) and Cindy Holmes (Calvain Sr.); five grandson, Calvain Holmes, Jr., Travaris Dorsey, Caleb Holmes, Louis Dorsey and Joshua Brazle; two granddaughters, Caliya Holmes and Ta’Mya Dorsey; sisters, Amy Jackson, Veronica Jones, Barbara Mcknight, Mary Espy of Washington, DC and Annette Dawson (Darryl) of Philadelphia, PA; brothers, Coleman Williams and Reuben Brooks (Michelle); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
