Valerie Richards Obituary

Valerie (Val) Lindsey was welcomed by her family, Willie Thomas and Etta Mae Lindsey on October 12, 1953, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Education and continued learning were always important to Valerie, so she sought education after high school and attended Old Dominion University gaining a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

While Valerie continued her studies in college, she met Albert Charles Richards, whom she married in 1975 in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1982, they moved to Jacksonville, Florida to raise their children. During this loving marriage, they were overjoyed and blessed with a family of four children, Sharmayne, Sharesse, Sharon and Shawn. They enjoyed life together and through the years traveling, volunteering, visiting and spending time with family, friends, and relatives. They dedicated their lives to ministry by ushering, helping at church events, and spreading the gospel to everyone in their life.

Valerie was a dedicated worker and loving mother. She was employed in various jobs and decided to focus her career in real estate and commercial appraisal. She excelled in her career for over twenty years and worked her way up to top commercial appraisal agent.

In 2017, Valerie’s husband, Albert passed away, but she continued to stay focused by working hard and taking care of her children and grandchildren. Valerie was a long-standing member at Impact Church, giving back to the church her time by volunteering at church services and assisting with church functions and events. Valerie had a love and passion for arts and crafts since she was a child, using her talent to sew clothing and create different inspired crafted items.

Valerie transitioned from her natural life into an everlasting spiritual life on Monday, April 7, 2025. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Willie and Etta Lindsey; husband, Albert Richards; and her sister, Linda Lindsey Beckett.

Valerie leaves in remembrance her ambitious spirit and continued success in life to her children, Sharmayne Mason (Derrick), Sharesse Branch (William), Sharon Richards and Shawn Richards; brothers, Willie Lindsey, Jr. (Mary) and Vernon Lindsey (Jean); sister, Monique Lindsey Smith; ten grandchildren; and a huge host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
