William Sanders, a gentle soul and cherished member of our community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on January 6, 1952, in Georgetown, South Carolina, William's life was a testament to love, kindness, and service.
William was the beloved son of the late Josephine and Melvin Sanders. He was predeceased by his son, Fionn Sanders and siblings, Debra Sanders, Melvin Sanders, Sylvia Sanders and Freddie Williams, with whom he shared a deep bond. He is survived by his loving wife, Delcina Sanders, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage since January 4, 1997. Their union was a testament to enduring love and companionship.
A proud graduate of Albert E. Smith Technical High School, William went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Marines. His dedication to service did not end there; he was the proud owner of Sanders and Sanders Maintenance Company, where he worked diligently, leaving a legacy of hard work and integrity.
Those who knew William remember a warm gentleman who possessed a gentle spirit and an unwavering willingness to help others. He was often the first to step forward to lend a hand or offer support to anyone in need. His faith was a cornerstone of his life; he loved the Lord and lived by His teachings, embodying empathy and generosity.
William's passions were as varied as they were deep. He found joy in painting, a testament to his creative spirit. He had an enduring love for driving sports and luxury cars, a hobby that brought him great joy. However, his greatest delight was found in the company of his grandchildren, with whom he spent countless hours playing and creating cherished memories. He was a man who loved working with his hands, whether it was building, fixing, or creating something new.
He leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor his memory: his children, Rodrick Fields, Kenyatta Sanders, Fiona Sanders-Blackwell, and Dajanai Maddox; his devoted step-son, Jamel Steed; his adoring grandchildren, Deion Sanders, Dallas Sanders, Amaree Blackwell, Aniyah Blackwell, Jakaree Blackwell, Fionn Blackwell, Zahir Maddox, Zaria Maddox, Zaija Maddox, Zhey Maddox, Starr Steed, and J'ream Steed; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Isaiah Matos, Jr., G'yani Reeves, and Nuhani Blackwell. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Sanders, and a host of other loving family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Though he has departed from this world, the warmth of his spirit and the impact of his love will remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. William Sanders was a man of quiet strength and profound kindness, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all.
