Howard Clifton Chandler, Jr.

May 15, 1949 ~ July 17, 2018 (age 69) 69 Years Old

Howard Clifton Chandler Jr., affectionately known as “Cliffie”, was born to the late Howard Clifton and GeorgeAnna Muriel Chandler in Orange, New Jersey on May 15, 1949.  He departed this life on July 17, 2018 at Orange Park Medical Center in Orange Park, Florida.

Howard grew up in East Orange, New Jersey with his sisters Cheryl Elaine and Karen Renee; Cheryl Elaine preceded Howard in death. Howard accepted Christ at an early age while attending Mt. Olive Baptist Church in East Orange, New Jersey where he later served as a Deacon. 

After graduating from East Orange High School in June 1967, Howard attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce Ohio.  Affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Wilberforce was the first college to be owned and operated by African Americans.

Upon his return from Wilberforce, Howard was employed by New Jersey Bell Telephone Company (Verizon), as a technician until his retirement.

In March 1976, Howard was accepted as a member of America’s Aerospace Team in the United States Air Force Reserve.  As a member of the Aerospace Team, Howard served in a position vital to our defense effort. He was proud of his choice to serve his country in an organization dedicated to maintaining our peace and freedom.

In July 1982, Howard was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force Reserve and received a certificate as a testimonial of honest and faithful service. 

In July 1988, Howard united in marriage with the late Gwendolyn Jones.  Howard and Gwendolyn relocated to Orange Park, Florida in 2001 where they served faithfully at Julington Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida.

 Howard will be remembered for his untiring devotion to his late wife Gwendolyn and his friendly spirit.

Howard leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted sister, Karen R. Mitchell and her husband Ryan J. Mitchell of Somerset, New Jersey; three nieces, Dawn M. Moss, Kelly R. Mitchell and Kimberly M. Mitchell; one nephew, Bryan C. Toney; a dear aunt, Lena East; his stepdaughters, Maisha and Rebecca; his stepsons Simeon and Jamin; and a host of cousins and friends.
