Robert Lee Edwards was born the second child of the late Elder Eugene and Mother Elizabeth Edwards on December 23, 1933 in Ararat, Alabama. He was raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord as his family faithfully served in the Church of God in Christ. He received an education in the Choctaw County public school district.
Robert moved to Jacksonville, Florida with his then wife, Lillie and their growing family in the late 1950’s in search of a better life. He soon found work in the construction industry and became a skilled brick mason and carpenter. His craftsmanship has held strong over the years and can still be observed in communities across the state of Florida.
He enjoyed fishing and having heart to heart talks with his sons. Gardening and eating good country cooking were his favorite pastimes. He cared affectionately for his companion and friend, Olivia. Visits with his grandchildren made him smile. And the special bond he shared with his daughter, Irene brought him joy and comfort.
Robert will be remembered as a great story teller. The life lessons he shared with family and friends are timeless. One of his well-known sayings is, “Get it like you live.” This expression of hard work and endurance is a testament of how he lived his life and the legacy he passed on to his descendants.
On November 27, 2017, God saw fit to call home, Robert Lee Edwards. He was preceded in death by his children, Carolyn Edwards and Robert Earl Edwards; and his brother, Rufus Edwards.
Leaving to cherish his memory are his children, Willie Lee Edwards, Theartha Edwards, Clay Smith (Denise), James Edwards (Angel), Larry Edwards (Carlenda), Irene Caupain (Kirk), Kim Harris, Florann Chapell and Rose Townsend; daughter-in-law, Annie Elizabeth Edwards; siblings, Mary Lett (twin), Thirlow Edwards (Marjorie), Joe Billy Edwards (Eliza), Katie Thomas and Jeremiah Edwards (Mary); and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
